ALL TIED UP: THE TIMELY RE-EMERGENCE OF CORSETRY

By September 7, 2016 No Comments

While restriction may not be your forte, giving the illusion of a smaller waist is always in fashion. The Fall/Winter 2016 shows displayed a plentitude of corsets, alluding to a fierce and emerging trend for the colder months to come.

Did you get the memo?

Without a doubt, Prada was the designer who dominated the trend. With near enough every look featuring an overt corset, the show stylists Olivier Rizzo proved the adaptability of the sexy trend. When added to outerwear, the corset created a cinched waist, and when styled carefully, fashioned a literal coat-dress, worn with tights and high-heels. In lieu of the sailor theme, as many models sported sailor hats, the accessory du saison added a new and unexpected dimension to a sequined gold, galactic dress.

Over in Paris, Olivier Rousteing of Balmain upped the lingerie ante with models wearing candy-colored corsets. Kendall Jenner both opened and closed the show with impactful lace-ups. The former look featured a pastel blue empire waist dress; stripes up top with a suede, feathered waist cinching bottom. Of the latter, Jenner rocked a leaf print dress with a staggeringly narrow cinched waist, held together by hook and eye clasps. Karlie Kloss, too, worked a full-on lingerie look, which featured a blush bustier, paired with lace ruffle pants and duster coat.

Loewe added a Grecian, contemporary feel to their fall winter show by way of plated corsets. Layered over a t-shirt maxi dress, the minimal accessory created a show stopping moment. However, the gold, or oro as Loewe calls is, deep-v bustier was the real MVP. Styled over otherwise unadorned dresses, the impact of the golden girdle would make Aphrodite fall in love.

In London, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen added bustier bearings to feminine ruffle dresses. Combining the brand’s typical Gothicism with lady-like pieces, the corset over dresses alluded to a fresh, new chapter at McQueen.

While innovative couturiers like Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and Christian Dior fought early on to relinquish women of pret-a-porter restrictions, the trend has fought its way back to the runways. Now serving as an accessory instead of an asset, corsetry will be autumn and winter’s go-to accoutrement for a seasonal, stylized update.
