As part of DESIGNOW’s continued partnership with Sophie Elgort’s Through Our Lens, a group of female students had a rare opportunity to be part of a real life photoshoot at our brand new studio in the heart of the NYC Fashion District. The theme of this session was “Art directors in the making.” Under the direction of Etienne Aigner’s Art Director, Yinan Xia, the women had a true hands-on experience of what it means to direct a photoshoot and how an Art Director collaborates with a photographer.
The daughter of noted fashion photographer Arthur Elgort, Sophie co-founded the Through Our Lens charity with her friend Carolyn Pride (who has a background in the non-profit world) to promote diversity in the industry by opening doors for young women interested in the arts who otherwise lacked access. This fellowship program gives these ladies a chance to build their portfolios and have access to high-level mentorship through Sophie and her connections. Further this is a chance for the fellows to form a community, learn valuable skills, and build self-esteem.
